Poor polysilicon performance affects Wacker’s Q3

Despite its chemical business performing strongly, Wacker Chemie AG’s Q3 2018 financials took a tumble, with polysilicon sales and EBITDA sharply declining. The blame has been laid on China’s PV policy change in May.

They demand US$25,400 in fines from Wacker Chemie for violations of various regulations. The manufacturer continues its efforts to resume production.

Wacker’s US polysilicon factory still on hold

Following an explosion at a U.S. production facility in 2017, the German polysilicon producer is under investigation by local authorities. Wacker Chemie must now pay a fine of US$20,000 for failing to comply with certain regulations regarding the provision of personal protective equipment and employee safety during maintenance work prior to the accident.

With a production output of 70,000 MT, Wacker was the largest producer of polysilicon last year. The previous market leader, Jiangsu Zhongneng Polysilicon, has had technical problems with the commissioning of its fluidized-bed reactor technology.

The German chemical giant finished off 2016 with increased sales and profit in its polysilicon division, as it remains the only Western polysilicon maker to sell directly into China.
