Despite record U.S. heat in July, North American irradiance remains near average
In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that, despite record-breaking U.S. heat, North America’s net solar irradiance in July 2026 remained near the long-term average, with 75% of the continent within 5% of normal. Wildfire smoke in the Pacific Northwest and isolated heavy rainfall in Texas and the Northeast suppressed solar resources, offsetting otherwise stronger-than-average conditions.
El Salvador launches regulatory framework for solar self-consumption
El Salvador has begun implementing its new renewable self-consumption framework, opening procedures for providers and solar PV installations. The regime introduces tax incentives, grid compensation for surplus generation, and provisions for energy storage and distributed self-consumption.

Partial U.S. eclipse produced similar daily solar energy losses to higher-obscuration European locations
In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that the Aug. 12 solar eclipse caused highly variable irradiance losses across Europe and North America, shaped by obscuration, cloud cover, and the timing of the eclipse.
However, eclipse-related power-market impacts varied much more, showing that irradiance loss or obscuration alone is not a reliable predictor of electricity-price effects.
Guatemala updates regulations for distributed solar up to 5 MW
Guatemala has updated its regulatory framework for renewable distributed-generation projects of up to 5 MW, introducing new connection procedures, grid-capacity mapping and technical requirements. The new rules take effect Aug. 17, while projects already under application may remain under the previous regime unless developers opt into the new framework.
Colombia: Earthquake affects power grid, but no damage reported at solar plants
A magnitude-7.4 earthquake in Colombia disrupted electricity supplies, leaving up to 20% of demand unmet in some affected regions. No damage has been reported at utility-scale solar plants, with the main impacts concentrated on transmission and distribution infrastructure.
