Optimizing PV-driven heat pump operation for homes with poor thermal insulation
Chinese researchers have proposed a near-zero-energy retrofit for traditional homes on the western Sichuan Plateau, combining rooftop PV with an air-source heat pump. The system could meet winter heating needs with 61 m² of PV and achieve a payback period of about 14 years.

China’s solar capacity hits 1.28 TW, accounts for 31.5% of total power capacity
China’s cumulative solar capacity reached 1.286 TW at the end of July, overtaking coal for the first time and accounting for around 31.5% of total installed power capacity. The milestone comes as the PV sector faces slowing installations, grid-integration constraints and overcapacity, shifting the focus from rapid deployment to reliable electricity supply.

China restores 2% lithium-ion battery tax after 11-year exemption
China has begun taxing lithium-ion batteries at 2% from Sept. 1, 2026, ending a decade-long exemption; the rate will rise to 4% in September 2027, while emerging technologies such as sodium-ion and solid-state batteries remain temporarily exempt. The tax applies to cells, packs and battery clusters—not complete BESS—and is expected to modestly raise domestic storage costs, while directly exported batteries remain exempt.
