EDPR commences construction of first US solar projects

EDP Renewables (EDPR) – a Madrid, Spain-headquartered company specializing in renewable energy – has begun the construction of the Lone Valley Solar Project – part of a 30 MW solar PV project in Southern California, U.S.

The projects were first acquired by EDPR from Lincoln Renewable Energy in 2013, and have in place a 20-year power purchase agreement with utility company Southern California Edison.

EDPR hopes that the Lone Valley Solar Project will help the company achieve its aim of diversifying its growth within the renewable technologies sector. Boasting the position as the world's third-largest producer of wind energy, EDPR has branched out into solar in recent years and owns a 50 MW PV plant in Romania, which was completed in 2013.

"The company is consistently committed to those combinations of markets and technologies where we see a clear positive path in the future," said Joao Manso Neto, EDP Renewables’ CEO. "This announcement in California once again serves to confirm our strategy in this regard."

Southern California has become something of a hotbed for solar development in recent months. Thanks to its high levels of solar radiation and its prime location, the region has seen impressive growth in its installation figures for both solar PV and concentrated solar power. The world's largest PV plant – the 250 MW California Valley Solar Ranch – opened late last year near San Luis Obispo, and there are many more multi-MW PV projects in the pipeline.
