Curtailment creeps

Solar development in Latin America over the past few years has been boosted by the region’s sunny climate and strong industrial demand for electricity. Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Colombia are four standout markets. This issue examines the curtailment problem that these and other Latin American nations are facing right now, and how they are dealing with it. Chile is going all out on hybrid connections, adding big batteries to solar parks, while Colombia is in need of critical grid upgrades to make use of its growing solar capacity.

Reporting on Argentina, pv magazine’s Luis Ini writes about moves to link solar expansion to demand from a growing mining sector in need of reliable clean energy. And Brazil, by far the largest market in Latin America, is preparing for upcoming battery auctions set to reshape its energy storage market and foster domestic manufacturing of battery components, as Livia Neves reports
