Greentech Media, GTM Research to be acquired by Verisk Analytics

Share

We at pv magazine have long enjoyed the well-researched and insightful writing of our colleagues at Greentech Media. Furthermore, GTM Research, the market research arm of Greentech Media Inc., has been a key source for much of our work covering solar in the Americas and the definitive source of U.S. solar market data.

On Tuesday, Greentech Media Inc. announced that Verisk Analytics has declared its intent to acquire both divisions of the company, in a transaction which is expected to close in the third quarter of 2016.

This will include the folding of GTM Research into Verisk subsidiary Wood Mackenzie, which provides research and consulting services for the energy, metal and mining industries. Verisk acquired Scotland-based Wood Mackenzie for $2.8 billion last year.

In an article announcing the bid, Greentech Media notes that this acquisition will allow it access to resources and global markets, and hinted at the company’s “next growth phase”. The publication also assured readers that its core mission of providing renewable energy information remains the same.

This is far from the first time that a larger energy research and consultancy firm has acquired a clean technology market research firm. In 2012 multi-industry information and analytics provider IHS (Now IHS Markit) acquired IMS Research and its team of experienced solar market analysts, and in 2014 swallowed up Solarbuzz.

Looking further back, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Bloomberg L.P. media empire acquired Michael Liebreich’s New Energy Finance in 2009, to make Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
