Sunrun to deploy LG Chem batteries in the US market

Today the second-largest U.S. residential solar installer announced a partnership with Korea’s LG to launch LG Chem’s Residential Energy Storage Unit (RESU) in the U.S. market. LG’s RESU lithium-ion battery systems will be included in Sunrun’s BrightBox solar PV plus storage systems, as RESU’s first deployment in the U.S. residential market.

Sunrun’s BrightBox is a third-party owned solar plus storage product. The company notes that it allows customers to comply with self-consumption policies in Hawaii, and the systems can additionally provide backup power. In the future, Sunrun plans to program energy storage systems in BrightBox offerings to allow customers on time-of-use rates to shift grid power usage to avoid paying peak rates.

Sunrun also plans to make the RESU available to other installers through its subsidiary AEE Solar, a nationwide distributor of solar products.

"The energy storage market is advancing at a breakneck pace," stated Sunrun Chief Marketing Officer Michael Grasso. "At Sunrun, we are enabling a home energy management service that integrates rooftop solar generation with onsite energy storage to offer greater energy choice and savings to our customers while helping to modernize the grid."

RESU was recognized with the the 2016 Intersolar Award at Intersolar Europe, which noted that the battery offers the world’s highest energy density in the low-voltage range, and due to different voltage offerings is also compatible with a wide range of inverters.

LG Is one of the world’s largest suppliers of batteries for electric vehicles, with an estimated 12% global market share in 2014.
