Trina Solar secured 104 MW of solar in third Mexico auction

The Chinese solar company won the right to develop 104 MWp of PV through a partnership with Mitsui & Co., in the third long-term auction held in Mexico last month.

Mexico's solar market is poised to become one of the world's largest in 2018, boosted by the nation's auction system.

Trina Solar, the vertically integrated Chinese solar power company, has confirmed that it won a total of 104 MWp of solar power projects last month during Mexico’s third long-term power auction.

The auction, which saw solar projects snap up 55% of the contracted energy and 58.3% of the clean energy certificates on offer, ushered in a new world record-low price of $20.57/MWh.

Trina Solar entered into the auction process with a partner in tow, Mitsui & Co., Ltd, which will co-invest in the 104 MW project to be built by Trina Solar in Zacatecas.

Commercial operation of the large-scale solar array is expected to begin by the second quarter of 2020, and Trina Solar has secured clean energy certificates to be sold under a 20-year purchase agreement. A 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) is also in place.

Once completed, the Zacatecas solar park will represent Trina Solar’s second-largest PV project in the country, following the securing of a contract to build the 133 MW Aguascalientes solar farm in Mexico’s second long-term auction last year.
