Sweden’s Midsummer receives $3.3 million CIGS equipment order, announces expansion


The Asian customer has signed a contract with Midsummer AB worth around SEK 30 million (US$3.3 million) for the delivery of another DUO thin film cell manufacturing line.

According to a statement released by the Stockholm-headquartered company, the equipment will be delivered in the first half of 2019.

On the back of strong demand in Asia for its flexible copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cell manufacturing equipment, Midsummer has said it will “strengthen … production capacity further to meet the increased demand for our products.”

“This repeat order is a strong indication that interest in our advanced solutions for the production and installation of thin film solar cells is growing in the Asian market,” said CEO, Sven Lindström.

He added, “Several strong global trends support our business idea and operations, not just the general need to switch to renewable energy, but also technical and regulatory developments that make thin solar panels attractive in urban environments.”

No further information was provided and Midsummer could not be immediately reached for comment.

Last August, the company received another repeat order for two of its DUO cell manufacturing lines, again from an unidentified Asian customer. Meanwhile, last January, it reported an order from Asia, said to be in the single-digit million Euro range. At the time, Midsummer planned to deliver the equipment in August 2017.

Overall, the company is going from strength to strength. In its latest financial report, released this March, it said it has a good order position for 2018, with strong demand. 2017 net sales almost doubled from 2016, to reach SEK 115 million, while profits reached SEK 23 million.

In the financial statement, it also said it aims to double the number of its employees this year, from 45 at the end of 2017. It added that its new building integrated PV (BIPV) panels launched in 2017, were well received, and there is very large interest in the product.
