The Hydrogen Stream: green hydrogen production begins at North Sea gas platform
The PosHYdon pilot project, the world’s first initiative to combine offshore wind power, natural gas production and offshore hydrogen production, has produced green hydrogen on the Q13a-A platform in the North Sea, operated by Eni Energy Netherlands. Located about 13 km off the coast of Scheveningen, Q13a-A is the first fully electrified production platform in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. The platform converts seawater into demineralized water, which is then used to produce hydrogen via electrolysis powered by offshore wind energy. PosHYdon is backed by DEME, EBN, Eneco, Emerson, Gasunie, Hatenboerwater, Investa Expertise Centrum, IV Offshore & Energy, Nel, Eni, Nexstep, NGT, Nogat, TAQA and TNO.
Hyundai Motor Group has opened Htwo Energy Cheongju, its first integrated waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) production and refueling facility, establishing a localized hydrogen production ecosystem in Cheongju, South Korea. “The facility represents a breakthrough for Htwo’s W2H business, transforming regional waste streams into hydrogen while reducing supply chain costs compared with hydrogen transported from distant coastal areas,” the company said.
RCT Hydrogen has received a purchase order and reached a final investment decision for a 10 MW turnkey electrolyzer project at the Port of Sines in Portugal. Beyond Green Lda is developing the project as part of the Sines Green Hydrogen Valley (SinesH2GValley) initiative. “The total project scope for RCT Hydrogen includes the full supply of all components required to connect the electrolyzer to the medium-voltage grid and produce hydrogen using renewable electricity,” said the German-Chinese joint venture between Germany’s RCT Group, which holds a 51% stake, and a Chinese alkaline electrolyzer manufacturer.
The Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC) said the results of its comprehensive call for interest (CfI) confirm strong market demand for the planned infrastructure. “The market survey captured 93 responses from 81 companies representing 108 projects. The results demonstrate that by 2040, projected market demand will reach 79.2 TWh per year, including 64.4 TWh from dedicated industrial projects and 14.8 TWh from German distribution networks, representing about 87% of the corridor’s theoretical annual capacity of 91 TWh estimated in pre-feasibility studies,” NBHC said. It added that technical, commercial and regulatory studies are underway and are expected to be completed in 2027.
The European Commission plans to organize the next round of the Hydrogen Mechanism later this year, focusing on energy infrastructure development. “Organizations interested in participating are invited to email [email protected] by Sept. 7, 2026. Expressing interest is non-binding. The Commission will contact interested parties to arrange a demonstration of the Hydrogen Mechanism and discuss the modalities of potential market tests,” the Commission said.
