Markets & Policy
In highly regulated energy markets, policy decisions can make or break new technologies, strategies, and even entire industries.
Support from policymakers, in the form of procurement exercises, priority dispatch, tax incentives and a wealth of other instruments, has been vital to the global solar industry’s success, and new mechanisms to support growth in energy storage are an increasingly important part of the story today.

Pricing India’s storage demand gap
India tendered more battery storage in 2025 than in the previous three years combined. Winning bids for these projects have fallen roughly 86% since the country’s first standalone energy storage auction in 2022. On the surface, this reads like a market maturing exactly on schedule. But the reality is less clean-cut, and Vision Mechatronics CEO Rashi Gupta sees industry figures repeatedly making the mistake of treating headline gigawatt-hours as a proxy for real demand.

BloombergNEF forecasts 584 GW of solar installations in 2026
BloombergNEF has cut its 2026 global solar installation forecast to 584 GW, down 10.8% from 2025, driven by a sharper-than-expected slowdown in China. Solar installations outside China are projected to grow to 313 GW, supported by expanding residential and commercial markets.
Germany deploys 12.76 GW of solar in first nine months of 2026
Germany installed 1.23 GW of solar capacity in September, down from 1.64 GW in August, as utility-scale additions hit their lowest level of 2026 and rooftop demand remained weak. Despite the slowdown, installations in the first nine months of 2026 reached 12.76 GW, slightly above the same period last year.
India’s solar industry faces workforce readiness gap
A Mercom India study has found that solar industry employers across project development, manufacturing, rooftop solar, and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) often need to spend months training fresh graduates before they are ready to contribute effectively.
Brazil’s presidential election: Lula and Bolsonaro’s proposals for solar energy
Brazil’s presidential election will be decided in Sunday’s runoff, with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro outlining competing energy policies. Both candidates propose expanding renewable energy and storage capacity while reducing electricity costs.
Mexico reports 6.86 GW of solar PV projects in development pipeline
Mexico’s Energy Ministry has identified 42 solar projects totaling 6.86 GW and 13 wind projects totaling 4.03 GW in its renewable energy development pipeline. Another 4.45 GW of solar capacity is awaiting allocation, with the government aiming to complete the process by the end of 2026.
