A 200 MW solar PV tender has been announced by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) as part of a concerted push by the authorities to increase the countrys renewable energy footprint.
The new tenders, which in the third phase will include 50 MW of concentrated solar power (CSP) and 250 MW of wind power rolled out initially, will be for development in the West Nile region of Egypt.
Solar PV projects will be offered to bidders who can demonstrate experience in completing at least three solar plants with a minimum of 50 MW capacity each, and all bids must come with a bid bond of approximately $4.5 million.
The EETC stipulates that successful solar bidders must build, own and operate the solar projects, and will then agree to sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the power they produce.
"The land for the projects will be made available by NREA on a usufruct basis for the duration of the projects," said a statement issued jointly by NREA and EETC.
The solar PV tender will be officially launched on August 30. In May Egypts Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy signed seven memoranda of understanding (MOUs) for 220 MW of solar PV under the governments FIT program, and has set a target of developing 4.7 GW of wind and solar power by 2017.
In June, the country inaugurated a 50 MW solar panel production facility in the northern region, as Egypt looks to take a firmer grip on its energy security and independence.
