Tipping point – 11-2023

11-2023 / 2023

On the African continent, we look at how rooftop solar is stepping in to plug the gap left by dampening enthusiasm for large solar projects. Commercial and industrial arrays are leading the charge and there has been a wave of merger and acquisition activity as companies try to keep pace with the opportunities opening in front of them.
From one set of opportunities to another, solar industry veteran Jigar Shah has some things to say about virtual power plants (VPPs). Known as the father of the solar power purchase agreement, Shah leads the US Department of Energy’s Loans Programs Office and explains some of the knowns and unknowns of rolling out VPPs.
This edition also offers readers the last chance to catch up on some of the outstanding entries that were submitted to the pv magazine Awards 2023. A solar plant for the world’s northernmost settlement, a retrofit residential battery solution, and eye-catching modules are just some of the entries you can read all about.

Other topics in this issue:

  • Taiwan’s big plans: the island wants to ensure energy independence and net-zero targets, but demand is currently frozen ahead of elections.
  • BESS lessons learned: it pays to have a rigorous approach to inspection across the supply chain.
  • Giving innovation wings: Looking at what propels the Solar Impulse Foundation.
  • Workforce dilemma: Shortages of skilled labor could derail progress.
  • Storage inverter market to top $11 billion: revenue from energy storage inverters tripled in 2022.
  • Bridging the gap: Estimates differ on just how much PV supply is held in European warehouses.

Consolidating growth in Africa

Across Africa, rooftop solar is stepping in to fill the void as fears of non-payment and inflation-reduced donor funding dampen enthusiasm for big solar. Commercial and industrial (C&I) arrays are leading the charge, driving consolidation in markets overstocked with startup and mid-size installers, as Max Hall discovers.

Integration on hold

Taiwan has big plans to ensure its energy independence and progress toward net-zero by 2050. Plans for new solar and offshore wind projects are taking shape and the need for energy storage to manage a grid with a growing share of intermittent renewables is being recognized. For the moment, however, many of these plans are on hold, with Taiwan’s government apparently nervous about making big moves ahead of elections scheduled for January 2024.
