China’s Trina Solar – a vertically integrated, Tier-1 solar company – has reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Andhra Pradesh government in India for the development of its previously announced Rs 2,800 crore ($518 million) 2 GW solar manufacturing facility.

According to a report by India’s Economic Times, the facility will be located at Atchutapuram in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, and the MoU was signed by Trina Solar VP Chen Shou Chung and India’s Industries Secretary SS Rawat in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Naidu is said to have remarked that the project will create employment opportunities for 3,500 people, and will deliver a huge energy boost to the state.

In the summer, Trina Solar confirmed to pv magazine that it had signed a framework agreement with a partner in India to develop a 2 GW solar cell and module manufacturing facility in the country. That partner is believed to be Welspun Energy, which will work with Trina on the development of the $500 million fab.

In a statement issued at the time, Trina indicated that the 2 GW scale is "only a draft plan, and the capacity will be built in various phases. We are still evaluating the final capacity scale and timetable, as well as the ownership structure." The company added that it was not willing to provide further details, until a final agreement with the unnamed local partner was locked in and contracts signed. pv magazine contacted Trina for an update on November 19.

This article was corrected on November 19. pv magazine mistakenly reported the MOU was for a solar PV plant. It has been amended to reflect it is regarding the manufacturing facility.
