HALEAD SUNPLUS Demonstrates Long-Term Reliability in the World’s First Large-Scale Desert Albedo Project
To address this challenge, HALEAD developed the SUNPLUS Albedo Reflective Material, engineered with diffuse reflection technology and an ultra-low surface energy design that delivers high reflectivity together with excellent self-cleaning performance. Rather than relying solely on laboratory testing, HALEAD validated the material through real-world operation in the world’s first large-scale Albedo reflective material project—a 500 MW photovoltaic power plant located in the Middle East desert.
Independent third-party outdoor tracking over four consecutive years confirmed the material’s outstanding durability under harsh environmental conditions. The tested product, HALEAD’s first-generation reflective material, began with an initial reflectivity of 80.18%. Even after four years of continuous exposure, it maintained remarkably stable performance after routine cleaning, demonstrating excellent weather resistance, low reflectance degradation and reliable long-term self-cleaning capability.
For bifacial photovoltaic systems, long-term reflectivity has a direct impact on rear-side energy generation and overall plant economics. By maintaining high reflectivity throughout the operating life of a solar plant, developers can increase energy yield, improve land-use efficiency and reduce the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE). For a typical 10 MW desert PV project, maintaining reflectivity above 80% can create significant additional revenue over the project’s lifetime while reducing maintenance requirements.
The success of this project also reflects HALEAD’s continuous product innovation. While the field validation was completed using the company’s first-generation reflective material, HALEAD has since introduced its third-generation SUNPLUS solution, delivering reflectivity of up to 88%. This new generation builds upon the proven durability of earlier products while offering even greater potential for improving bifacial PV performance.
At HALEAD, product performance is measured not only by laboratory specifications but by long-term results in demanding operating environments. The four-year empirical verification from the Middle East desert demonstrates that SUNPLUS is more than a highly reflective material—it is a long-term engineering solution designed to help solar developers maximize energy production, reduce lifecycle costs and support the sustainable growth of utility-scale photovoltaic projects worldwide.
