Indian solar developer Welspun Energy Private Limited (WEPL) has been awarded the Golden Peacock Innovative Service Award 2014.

The award was presented by Shrimati Sheila Dikshit, governor of Kerala and former chief minister of Delhi, for the innovations made by WEPL in the modified module mounting structure used for the installation of modules in solar power projects.

The ceremony was held during the 24th World Congress on Total Quality and Leadership in Trivandrum Kerala, in the presence of business leaders, jurists, academics, environmentalists, economists, legislators and policy makers.

Vineet Mittal, managing director WEPL, said: "It is a proud day for us at Welspun Energy. We have been challenging ourselves by re-engineering each practice to come up with the most effective way of setting up solar power projects.

"We have made our mark in the Indian solar industry with our engineering, procurement and commissioning (EPC) initiatives.

"The modified module mounting structure is a great example of ingenuity by streamlining the structure from the usual industry design. The Golden Peacock award recognizes this key quality of the organization and drives us to file many more patents."

Due to the innovation, WEPL has been able to drastically reduce the project erection time with lower cost implications.

Given its simplified design, the need for training or technological expertise required also reduces, leading to faster commissioning of solar projects. A characteristic Welspun Energy has become synonymous with, its 151 MW Neemuch and 55 MW Phalodi projects having set benchmarks for being commissioned far ahead of schedule.

The award process was presided over by chairman Justice PN Bhagwati, former chief justice of India with Justice Arijit Pasayat, chairman of the Authority for Advance Ruling, former Indian Supreme Court judge and former chairman of the Competition Appellate Tribunal of India.

Welspun Energy has commissioned over 328 MW of solar and wind capacity and has a further 723.5 MW under construction.

The organization envisions pan-Indian power projects with current schemes in high solar radiation and wind velocity zones including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Punjab.
