SDG&E transmission line passes 1 GW renewables mark

$1.9bn Sunrise Powerlink is carrying 1 GW of solar and wind power to San Diego. 150 MW from Solar Gen 2 project took utility past the landmark.

Utility San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) has announced it has passed the 1 GW milestone in terms of renewable power being supplied to the Californian city.
The recent addition of the 150 MW of power generated by the Solar Gen 2 solar project in Imperial Valley takes the amount of wind and solar transmitted by the new Sunrise Powerlink transmission line above the 1 GW mark and is part of a portfolio that has more than 30% of SDG&E’s power generated from renewables.
The $1.9 billion transmission line, completed in 2012, is a 500 kV line connecting San Diego and Imperial Valley, where seven of SDG&E’s ten renewables projects in the valley are online and generating more than 1 GW of power.
The renewables portfolio helps plug the energy shortfall seen since the retirement of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
The landmark announcement was revealed in a press release on SDG&E’s website yesterday (Thursday).
