Saudi inaugurates first solar power plant


The 500 kilowatt system, located on Farasan Island, is expected to save the equivalent of transferring 28,000 barrels of diesel fuel to the island each year. It was constructed by the Saudi Electricity Company and Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K.

Commenting, Saudi Ambassador to the United States Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said, "Saudi Arabia is committed to building and refining alternative energy solutions. This program is one large step that will benefit the environment and the Saudi people."

The Undersecretary of the Governorate of Jazan Region Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Suwayid officially inaugurated the solar system, in the presence of the SEC CEO Eng. Ali Saleh Al-Barrak, president and CEO of Saudi Aramco Eng. Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al-Falih and the Japanese Ambassador to the Kingdom Shigeru Endo.
