Siemens and AES Corporation create new energy storage company Fluence


German technology giant Siemens has expanded its presence in the growing global energy storage market via its involvement in Fluence – a new storage company created by Siemens and U.S.-headquartered power company AES Corporation.

The collaboration will see the delivery of two new energy storage platforms to 160 countries worldwide. Fluence’s Advancion and Siestorage solutions will spearhead the firm’s launch, while both Siemens and AES Energy Storage, a subsidiary of AES Corporation, will lend their expertise and experience to the new platform.

Each firm will hold a 50% stake in Fluence, which will set up camp with headquarters in Washington DC and additional offices in Germany and selected cities worldwide.

Fluence will act independently of its parent companies, a joint Siemens-AES press release stated, but will obviously lean heavily on both Siemens’ and AES’ battery experience, which combined amounts to 463 MW of battery-based energy storage capacity globally.

According to Siemens CEO of energy management Ralf Christian, Fluence will fill a major gap in the market – that of enabling customers to find a trusted technology partner that has both profound knowledge of the power sector and an established portfolio of energy storage projects.

“With the global reach of an experienced international sales force as well as Siemens’ leading technology platform Siestorage at its disposal, Fluence will be perfectly equipped to serve this very interesting market,” Christian said.

Key features of the Siestorage platform include microgrid and islanding applications, hybrid technology, black-start capability, and peak-shaving for residential and C&I customers. The AES Advancion, meanwhile, is rooted in utility-scale battery-based storage solutions capable of offering flexible peaking capacity and frequency regulation.

Today AES’ Advancion platform is present in seven countries with more than 200 MW of energy storage deployed, including the largest installed system of its kind in the world,” said Andrés Gluski, AES President and CEO. The platform Gluski was referring to is the world’s largest lithium-ion battery project near San Diego, California.

Earlier this year, Siemens entered into a partnership with Eos Energy, another U.S. energy storage specialist, for the integration and installation of Eos’ Aurora range of 1-4 MWh battery solutions.
