Iberdrola plans 590 MW solar park in southern Spain

Spanish energy company Iberdrola revealed it is planning to build a 590 MW unsubsidized solar park in southern Spain.

In a statement released, the company said the plant will be commissioned in 2022 and will be deployed on a 1,300-hectare surface in the municipal areas of Torrecillas de la Tiesa and Aldeacentenera, near Caceres, in the Spanish southern region of Extremadura.

The €300 million Francisco Pizarro project, Iberdrola stated, will add to its current 2 GW solar project portfolio in Spain, which also includes the 50 MW Andévalo photovoltaic project in Andalucia, the Romeral 50 MW project in Cuenca, in Castile–La Mancha, and the 328 MW Ceclavín project, the 150 MW Arenales solar park and Campo Arañuelo I and II photovoltaic plants of 50 MW each, which are all located in Extremadura.

Another big project under construction by the company is the Núñez de Balboa photovoltaic plant in Usagre, near Badajoz, for which it secured a PPA with Spain’s distribution group Uvesco (BM Supermarcados) in November. The first PPA for the Nuñez de Balboa was signed with financial services provider Kutxabank in July. Later in mid-October, Iberdrola bagged its second PPA for the project from Spanish and Basque country-based telecoms company Euskatel.

“In Spain, Iberdrola has more than 700 MW renewables under construction (the Núnez de Balboa photovoltaic plant and wind projects in three regions), expected to go into service between 2019 and 2020,” the company explained in today’s statement.
