Latvia expands residential solar and battery rebate scheme

Latvia’s Ministry of Climate and Energy has expanded its household renewable energy support program, increasing financial support for eligible households installing technologies including solar PV and battery energy storage systems.

For PV, households holding Latvia’s Goda ģimene family card will be eligible for grants covering up to 85% of eligible costs, up from 70%. The card is a government-backed benefit scheme for large families and families caring for a child with a disability.

The support program has a total budget of €85 million ($98.7 million), of which around €20 million remains available. Households can receive up to €15,000 per project, depending on the technologies installed and their capacity.

For battery storage, the government has increased the minimum eligible nominal capacity from 5 kWh to 10 kWh. The ministry said the change is intended to enable households to store more of their self-generated electricity for later use.

As of May 2026, the scheme had supported 15,700 projects, with more than €59.75 million awarded, according to the Latvian government. Solar PV was by far the most popular technology, with the ministry reporting more than 14,000 applications for solar panels, alongside more than 2,000 applications for batteries.

Latvia’s solar capacity has reached 1,521 MW, according to statistics released by the Latvian Renewable Energy Alliance (LREA) in August.

The figure indicates around 601 MW of solar have been added in the country so far this year, adding to the 920 MW that were installed by the end of the last year. This growth trajectory means 2026 is already the most successful year for solar deployment in Latvia, outpacing the previous calendar record year of 319 MW in 2024.
