Ghana’s PV capacity tops 276 MW
Ghana reached a cumulative installed PV capacity of 276.7 MW at the end of 2025, according to figures released by the country’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition in its updated Renewable Energy Master Plan (REMP) 2026–2030.
Utility-scale PV plants accounted for 183.1 MW of the total, while distributed solar installations reached 86 MW and small-scale residential PV systems totaled 7.6 MW.
Ghana’s 183.1 MW of utility-scale solar capacity includes the 100 MW Bui solar complex, 28 MW of PV at Kaleo, the 20 MW BXC and 20 MW Meinergy plants, the 6.5 MW Lawra plant, 5 MW of floating PV at Bui and the 2.5 MW Navrongo plant.
The government said installed capacity remained below its targets of 347.5 MW for utility-scale PV, 100 MW for distributed solar and 15 MW for small-scale residential systems.
In order to fill this gap, the country is now targeting to deploy another 852 MW of ground-mounted PV, 214 MW of distributed solar, and 5 MW of small PV systems by 2030. It also intends to increase the capacity of renewables-powered mini-grids from only around 4 MW currently to 444 MW by the end of the decade.
The Ghanain government intends to achieve the proposed goals by accelerating utility-scale PV through private investment and public-privates partnerships (PPPs),
It also wants to develop floating solar, expand distributed PV under net metering and build a domestic solar manufacturing industry.
The REMP expects the private sector to provide 41% of investment for utility-scale PV, 50% for distributed PV and 70% for solar home systems. The wider financing strategy includes sovereign green bonds, concessional finance, climate funds, development banks, pension funds and other long-term capital.
The plan also sets a 1,970 MWh battery energy storage target for 2026–30 and calls for policies governing BESS pricing and grid integration, private investment in storage, and R&D in battery chemistry, recycling and second-life applications.
