Building quality domestic U.S. solar cell fabs is more important than technology-choice today
Analysis taken from the new Solar Manufacturing USA Quarterly report highlights steady progress with c-Si cell production during 2026, with strong upside to the forecast through 2027 if existing lines can be ramped effectively and some of the 2027 plans are brought forward by just a few months.
Spacebound silicon
Solar has a long history in powering satellites and space exploration, and high-powered devices based on multijunction PV cells made from “III-V” materials such as gallium arsenide or indium gallium phosphide have supplied this niche market as far back as the 1960s. But those devices are made with rare materials and complex processing, limited to small batches produced at high cost.
