Battery battle: silicon vs. graphite
Battery-anode material graphite is fraught with significant supply chain risk, as less than 10% of global supply is currently outside China. SCC55, made by Group14, is a stable silicon-carbon composite anode that can partly or wholly replace graphite in lithium battery anodes. pv magazine spoke to Grant Ray, Group14 vice president for global market strategy.
Washington state-based Group14 recently started expanding in Europe. In 2023, it acquired the Schmid Silicon plant in Schwarze Pumpe, in the German state of Saxony. It also has a base in Stuttgart.
