Carrier launches rooftop heat pump for commercial buildings
Carrier, a US-based heating solutions provider, has launched a new reversible rooftop heat pump for commercial and industrial buildings.
The WeatherFlex 50FC is an air-to-air unit using R-454C, an A2L refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) below 150.
Carrier said the product was developed in anticipation of tighter requirements under the European Union’s F-gas rules for commercial heat pumps and air-conditioning equipment.
The new series covers applications in the 20 kW to 50 kW range. According to product information from the manufacturer, the units offer nominal cooling capacities ranging from 23 kW to 49 kW and heating capacities from 22 kW to 50 kW.
The system uses variable-speed scroll compressors and is designed to operate at outdoor temperatures ranging from -18 C to 50 C. Carrier said the compressor and system design are intended to improve seasonal energy efficiency, although it has not published specific seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) or seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) values in its product announcement.
The rooftop units are designed for both new-build and retrofit projects. Available configurations include free cooling, heat recovery, variable ventilation and extended airflow. Factory-programmed controls are intended to reduce commissioning requirements during installation.
Carrier has also equipped the units with integrated controls for multi-zone management and energy metering. They can be connected to the company’s Abound HVAC platform for remote monitoring and building-system management.
The manufacturer said the new range targets commercial applications affected by the next stages of the EU F-gas phase-down. Under the regulation, a GWP limit of 150 is set to apply to certain self-contained air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment with capacities of up to 50 kW from 2027.
Carrier already offers 50FC rooftop heat pumps using R-454B. The existing range has nominal heating and cooling capacities of around 22 kW to 90 kW, with SEER values ranging from 4.49 to 5.07 and SCOP values from around 3.45 to 3.80.
