Offering high efficiency as well as a clumsy welter of initialisms, the n-type i-TOPCon glass-glass bifac has an output of 425 watts on the front side, resulting in module efficiency of 20.7%, according to the manufacturer.
The product consists of a combination of n-type half cells with multi-busbar technology and rectangular monocrystalline, double-sided half cells that will achieve bifaciality of more than 80%, according to Trina. The additional yield advantage on the back is of 5-30% and Trina said the highly efficient modules have a low temperature coefficient and will suffer low light-induced degradation. The Chinese manufacturer has given a linear performance guarantee of 30 years on the product.
A record-breaking laboratory efficiency of 25.8% for single-sided TOPCon cells developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems has driven the development of the technology internationally. Trina started work on bifacial TOPCon cells for mass production in its research lab in 2015 and this year achieved average efficiency of more than 23% for the cells. The i-TOPCon cells from Trina had a boron emitter on the front and passivated contact covering the entire rear surface. The technology was then transferred to serial production in Changzhou.
Trina recently announced a new efficiency record of 24.58% for the cells, a figure independently confirmed by ISFH CalTec research institute.
