Applications & Installations
Among energy technologies, solar is unique in its flexibility and range of applications. Rapidly growing niches including floating PV and agrivoltaics are proving their worth alongside the more established rooftop and ground mount market segments.
Hybrid systems combining solar with energy storage and other generation technologies are also becoming more common, in the pursuit of 24/7 emissions free energy. And this brings our industry into more frequent contact with other concerns, that need to be carefully managed.

Corsica Sole switches on 150 kW electrolyzer at 12 MW solar plant
Corsica Sole has commissioned a 150 kW green hydrogen facility at its 12 MW Folelli solar plant in Corsica to convert otherwise-curtailed solar power into hydrogen. The facility can produce around 20 kg of hydrogen per day and store up to 230 kg for use in maritime transport and other local applications.

How grid-forming and AI technologies are helping overcome barriers to renewable growth
The imbalance between rapid growth in installed renewable capacity and the grid’s ability to accommodate it has become a practical challenge to both grid security and economic performance. Huawei has positioned its products as solutions to three key barriers to renewable deployment.
French agrivoltaic trials cut water loss, lift maize yields by 19.6%
TSE’s agrivoltaic trials in France recorded barley yields of up to 96% of those in a control plot and reduced seasonal evapotranspiration by 20%. At a separate site, maize yield beneath the canopy was 19.6% higher during exceptionally hot and dry conditions.
Taking system responsibility
A consortium in Germany is testing the use of grid-forming inverters to connect large-scale battery storage systems at the distribution grid level. Such systems can and must provide this capability at scale if renewables are to become the backbone of any region’s energy system. As part of pv magazine’s Renewables 24/7 special, Jochen Siemer takes a closer look at this project.
