Grid operator Eon Edis has withdrawn previously agreed import capacity for a newly opened 69 MW solar-plus-storage plant in northeastern Germany, limiting its 76.5 MWh battery to storing only power generated on-site.

French agrivoltaic trials cut water loss, lift maize yields by 19.6%
TSE’s agrivoltaic trials in France recorded barley yields of up to 96% of those in a control plot and reduced seasonal evapotranspiration by 20%. At a separate site, maize yield beneath the canopy was 19.6% higher during exceptionally hot and dry conditions.

Taking system responsibility

Solar has a long history in powering satellites and space exploration, and high-powered devices based on multijunction PV cells made from “III-V” materials such as gallium arsenide or indium gallium phosphide have supplied this niche market as far back as the 1960s. Shower wastewater heat pump achieves year-round COP of up to 4.1
Chinese researchers tested a hybrid shower wastewater- and air-source heat pump at university dormitories, recording a stable monthly COP of 3.4 to 4.1 over one year. The system cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by up to 77.77% and offered lower life-cycle costs than conventional boilers under typical market conditions.

After 30 years in hot-arid climate, Arco solar modules still deliver about half their original power
Algerian researchers found that 64 aged Arco Solar modules retained an average of 53% of their original 43 W rated power after three decades of outdoor exposure. The assessment revealed substantial power variation, widespread discoloration and browning, moisture-related insulation concerns, and hot spots in 46% of the modules.

Scientists build 17%-efficient semi-transparent perovskite solar cell based on sputter-resistant aluminum oxide layer
Researchers replaced the conventional 20 nm SnOₓ buffer layer with just 3 nm of ALD-deposited AlOₓ, which protected inverted perovskite cells from ITO sputtering damage while maintaining efficient charge extraction. The resulting devices achieved efficiencies above 17% in semi-transparent cells and 26% in perovskite-silicon tandems, while reducing material use and fabrication time.

PV inverters provide reactive power to Milan’s grid at night
Researchers in Milan used PV inverters to supply 500 kVAr of reactive power to the distribution grid for four hours overnight. The trial showed that existing solar equipment can support voltage regulation even when it is not generating electricity.

Indian Government unveils new guidelines for off-grid solar PV
The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has unveiled new guidelines for off-grid and decentralized solar applications, which are to be achieved as a part of the National Solar Mission. Rooftop and other small solar power plants are also included.
USD$1.85 billion boost for US solar industry
President Barack Obama has announced that USD$1.85 billion in conditional commitments will be made available in the form of loan guarantees to two U.S. solar companies. As a result, one of the worlds biggest solar plants is scheduled to be built in Arizona, while around 5,000 jobs are expected to be created.

Intersolar extends strategic partner program in U.S.
Intersolar North America and Solartech have announced an expanded partnership for the 2010 Intersolar North America conference. Under the agreement, Solartech will now provide an additional program offering at the conference. Other reciprocal elements between both organizations will extend into next year.
China's Yingli to triple solar panel capacity
Chinese solar power system manufacturer Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. aims to triple solar panel production capacity in the next three years to three gigawatts a year at a total cost of roughly 200 billion yen (around USD$2.2 billion; 1.8 billion), says Japanese news source Nikkei.
New research suggests solar cell manufacture costs could be dramatically lowered
The Dichtel group has said it has developed a method to organize organic dyes into stacked sheets that are porous for incorporation into flexible solar cells. The process, it says, could revolutionize the way solar cells are made by lowering costs dramatically, while creating highly efficient and easy-to-manufacture solar cells.
