Ireland’s sixth renewables auction puts solar to the test under new NZIA rules

New materials in the frame
Solar cells, encapsulants, glass, backsheets, and virtually every PV module component have seen rapid changes and improvements over the past 10 years. During that time, module frames have seen relatively little innovation and remain a simple piece of formed aluminum. However, quality concerns, supply chain diversification, domestic content rules, and emissions reduction requirements have frame manufacturers eyeing alternative materials. And while aluminum isn’t going away, suppliers of steel and glass composite frames argue these materials come with various advantages.

Hinen launches 13.68 kWh residential energy storage system
Hinen’s A15 residential energy storage system combines 3.6 kW to 15 kW hybrid inverters with 14.4 kWh LFP battery modules, each offering 13.68 kWh of usable capacity. Up to six batteries can be connected in parallel for 86.4 kWh nominal and 82.08 kWh usable capacity, with more than 8,000 cycles, IP65 protection and a 12-year warranty.

Fraunhofer ISE researchers developed a millisecond-scale electrical method to separately measure perovskite and silicon subcell currents in tandem solar cells using the silicon cell’s capacitive charge reservoir. Italian scientists build glass-free flexible silicon PV modules via roll-to-roll
Researchers have developed a glass-free flexible crystalline-silicon module architecture based on commercial IBC cells and a PET/EVA stack manufactured via roll-to-roll hot lamination. The 2 × 2 mini-module retained 96.12% of its initial efficiency after 672 hours of outdoor testing at a fixed bending radius of 150 mm.

AZO-based HJT solar cells more vulnerable to damp-heat-induced degradation, study finds
German researchers have found that aluminum-doped zinc oxide-based silicon heterojunction cells are more vulnerable to damp-heat-induced degradation than their indium tin oxide-based counterparts. To address this issue, they introduced a magnesium fluoride capping layer that significantly improved damp-heat stability by slowing moisture penetration and corrosion.

Soliant Energy receives UL listing for commercial rooftop solar systems
Soliant Energy has received UL Listing from the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. for its SE-500X solar cells. The company also says its SE-500X line is the first product certified to be under the SU 8703 UL draft standard, a new comprehensive code defined specifically to test safety parameters of concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) products.

PV capacity to fall considerably in 2011 warns new report
Changes in incentive schemes and new regulations could see the total capacity of photovoltaics (PV) installations fall considerably in 2011, meaning new markets would have to pick up the shortfall. The news comes as IMS Research says that 14.6 gigawatts (GW) of new PV capacity will be added worldwide this year.

Silexsolar to increase PV panel production capacity to 20 MW?
Silexsolar Pty Ltd is to expand its photovoltaics (PV) panel production capacity at its Sydney Olympic Park (SOP) manufacturing facility in Australia by seven megawatts (MW), in response to strong demand for its panels from the domestic rooftop solar panel market. AUD$7 million is expected to be invested.
