Mobisol, the Berlin-based provider of smart solar solutions in East Africa, has been recognized as “Lighthouse Activity” and was awarded with the “Momentum for Change” Award by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) during the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris.

Mobisol was named one of sixteen inspiring “Lighthouse Activities” which highlight some of the most innovative, scalable and replicable examples of what people are doing to address climate change. The solar service provider received the award in the Information Communication Technology Solutions category.

Mobisol, East Africa’s largest rent-to-own solar energy provider by capacity installed, has so far provided over 35,000 Rwandan and Tanzanian households and businesses with clean, affordable and reliable solar energy. The systems are made affordable by micro-financed instalments over three years. Their sustainability is guaranteed by an extended warranty, high-quality robust components, free-of-charge installation and a three-year free maintenance package backed by remote monitoring and comprehensive IT solutions.

Working with reliable partners within the German and East African Governments, as well as the European Union and development organizations, Mobisol strives in the years to come to continue to foster economic growth, educational opportunities and climate change mitigation by empowering hundreds of thousands of households and businesses, as well as schools and public institutions in East Africa and Asia.

“Momentum for Change” is spearheaded by the UNFCCC Secretariat as part of wider efforts to mobilize action and ambition as national governments work toward adopting a new universal climate agreement. The awards were handed out on Dec 9th at a multifarious event during the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, just days before the Heads of States reached a climate agreement to cut carbon emissions and strengthen the implementation of the sustainable development goals.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon emphasized the exemplary function of the award winners for world wide climate action while speaking at the award ceremony: “The lighthouse activities of this years’ award winners highlight resourceful, innovative and replicable examples that can serve as a beacon of light to inspire others to take action.”

Mobisol’s CEO Thomas Gottschalk stated: “The Paris agreement is a first step towards a more sustainable energy future; now it’s up to leaders and communities worldwide to deliver on those promises. I strongly believe that we can develop and widely implement sustainable solutions for some of the world’s most pressing challenges – and we are deeply grateful that Mobisol was honoured in this context as a solution presenting a “Momentum for Change”.
