Sunlabob Renewable Energy recently finalized a contract with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to supply, install and provide operational training for solar power installations at seven telecommunication systems across the Solomon Islands.
The installations will provide 100 percent solar-based electricity, enabling the Pacific island nation to reduce operational costs at seven provincial government offices on the islands of Tulagi, Buala, Gizo, Kirakira, Taro, Tingoa and Lata.
Solomon Islands currently has one of the lowest rates of electricity access in the world and electricity prices sometimes more than US$0.80 per kWh.
In addition to installation, Sunlabob engineers will also provide on-site training to operators and end-users as well as local electricians and technicians to assist implementation and maintenance.
Solomon Islands will benefit in multiple ways, said Andy Schroeter, Sunlabob CEO. The provincial offices will reduce operational costs by cutting out fossil fuels and simultaneously the Islands will be provided with increased solar skills and capacity building for its local technicians.
This project is part of a larger effort by the Solomon Islands government to reduce its reliance on imported energy sources by scaling up the use of renewable and efficient energy programs.
