Beetle exoskeletons as reference model for the world’s toughest solar tracker

Mechatron, a leading manufacturer of solar trackers, presents two innovative solar tracker systems at Intersolar 2012, increasing the energy yield of PV modules up to 40 percent.

The dual axis system D180, which follows the sun azimuthally (around its vertical axis) and elevationally (around its horizontal axis), is the most advanced dual axis solar tracking system in the market. The single axis system S140, which follows the sun azimuthally, has been built to withstand every wind speed and weather conditions, even hurricanes.

Its structure design principle is derived from beetles’ exoskeletons, which possess a superior strength to weight ratio. Mechatron has a strong focus on research and development with a high qualified R&D department and a corporate culture striving for constant innovation.

The company’s solar tracking systems are subjected to strict on site tests in rough weather as well as in various climate and environment conditions. All systems are internationally certified. The system is suited for PV modules with a capacity of up to 28 kW per unit and shows a surface size of up to 180 m2. Its azimuthal motion range is about 330°, while its elevation motion range is between 0 and 58°. Mechatron’s new single axis system S140 with its azimuthal motion range also covers 330°. The solar tracker is extremely robust and resists even in hurricanes.

Beetles’ exoskeletons served as a bionic model in terms of stiffness and strength. The structure of S140 is a unique combination of an elliptical tube design and a simple lattice structure holding the panels. This end solution provides extremely high structural rigidity and high strength for structural survivability.

In addition, a patented zero-backlash drive mechanism allows for smooth movement and operation. The innovative design and superior construction is based on Mechatron’s accumulated design knowledge, field experience and validated through extensive testing.
