Berne's new tram depot: first class solar system from Lyss

This system, specially developed for the building, not only performs well, but fits in well aesthetically with the overall architecture.

For the tram depot project, 3S Photovoltaics picked up the challenge set by the planners and architects and developed a special module. Adapting module design to a specific building project is one of 3S Photovoltaics' major strengths. The 1,120 frameless solar modules were manufactured with ultra-robust 10 mm cover glass so that they can be walked on while at the same time being easy to install with just four fastening points.

Optimum use is made of the available roof area for power generation. The solar power system has an installed total power output approaching 300 kilowatt peak (maximum power output of the photovoltaic modules).

The solar modules are installed on 13 gable structures on the roof. The solar power system, which faces south-east, is forecast to supply an annual power output of around 260,000 kWh, approximately corresponding to the annual energy consumption of 60 single-family homes.

The advanced module design with thick cover glass and without a metal frame stops dirt from building up around the edges of the module. This means that they are almost entirely self-cleaning, so combining the highest possible energy yields over the long term with the least possible maintenance effort.

The new system was installed by BE Netz AG. Energie Wasser Bern, the local power and water utility, will purchase the solar electricity which is generated.
