E.ON Aura Manager helps customers use more of their own solar energy

E.ON is making its customers fit for tomorrow’s distributed energy world: the new E.ON Aura Manager, which will be available in a few weeks’ time, and the app that comes with it will make it much easier for customers to optimize their own solar energy generation in line with their energy demand. The self-learning system uses forecasts of expected generation and consumption levels to enable customers to use as much of the electricity produced by their own PV systems in their homes. This makes the energy manager an ideal supplement to the E.ON Aura electricity storage device, which has been available since spring. With an efficiency of 93 percent is one of the most efficient storage systems on the German market. “More and more electricity is produced locally, in other words at the point of use,” explains Uwe Kolks, Managing Director of E.ON Energie Deutschland. “The Aura Manager gives our customers full transparency and full control over solar energy generation and use in their homes.” Jointly developed with customers, the app will set new standards especially in matters of usability.

What does the app offer?

The app has been developed specifically for E.ON Aura customers based on feedback received from customers. It is straight-forward and easy to use and can even be customized, if desired. Using self-explanatory diagrams the Aura Manager shows at a glance how much solar energy the PV system is producing at any point in time and how much is being used in the home and/or taken from storage. The app also offers an analysis tool developed for PV novices and experts alike. Graphics showing consumption, generation and battery status can be displayed as daily, weekly, monthly and annual charts. This information can also be summarized in customized diagrams. This way the user can find out and understand in a playful way how his behaviour can improve the efficiency of the PV system. The diverse range of functions is rounded off by a solar self-sufficiency and CO2 savings ranking as well as a customized weather forecast. The app can be used on smartphones, tablets and computers. It automatically adjusts itself to any standard display size.

The E.ON Aura Manager is smart-grid-ready, allowing customers to apply for funding from Germany’s KfW development bank. The hardware installed can in future also be used to control larger energy-consuming equipment and appliances such as heat pumps, tumble driers and electric cars in an intelligent way.

Easy installation

Installation is pretty straightforward. Once the E.ON Aura storage device has been installed, a so-called controller, which is a small box containing hardware, has to be fitted inside the meter cabinet. The app can then be downloaded free of charge and synchronized for Android or Apple iOS devices. The data are stored on German servers and meet the EU’s high security standards for data storage and transmission. The storage device has been developed in cooperation with Dresden-based SOLARWATT GmbH. It will continue to be developed and improved steadily in line with market and customer needs.
