In August, the Low Carbon Business Action in Brazil (LCBA) recorded 83 cooperation agreements at its first Matchmaking Mission organized for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in order to promote the increase of energy efficiency in buildings. The mission, which is part of a EU funded project, has joined a total of 54 companies, being 38 from Brazil and 16 from Europe. The business rounds stimulated the exchange of innovative experiences, supporting companies into their transition to low carbon technologies and processes.

The first out of 8 LCBA matchmaking missions (MM) took place in São Paulo, at L’Hotel and Green Building Council – GBC Exhibition trade fair. For the first time in the Americas, EU has launched an Action targeting Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). "Brazil has an important role in multilateral discussions on the mitigation of global climate change. It also has a huge market and recognized importance in the economic, social and political relations with EU”, says Ricardo Esparta, senior specialist in low carbon technologies at LCBA. In addition to Brazil, a similar program is under way in Mexico.

The European companies selected for the LCBA matchmaking mission have innovative solutions in the area of sustainable buildings. Then, the main reason of the meeting was the promotion of cooperation and partnership agreements with the Brazilian counterparts, in order to spread and upscale the solutions in the country. These partnerships will be monitored and supported by the European Union, especially during the projects’ formulation and the development of funding proposals. The 83 agreements signed in the first mission exceeded the initial expectations – the setting of 80 business arrangements throughout the project´s eight planned events.

In total, the Action aims at engaging 720 SMEs from Brazil and from the 28 Member States in Europe through a series of matchmaking missions to be held between August 2016 and December 2017. This business programme will target sectors that are responsible for a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil, such as Forestry Activities, Agriculture, Industrial Processes, Production and Consumption of Energy, Biomass, Aquaculture, Energy Efficiency in Buildings and Industry and Solid Waste Management.

The upcoming events planned for 2016 in Sao Paulo are: Solid Waste Management – in line with Fimai Ecomondo fair (3-7 October); Biogas and Biomethane – back to back with the III Forum Nacional de Biogas from ABiogás (17-21 October); and Renewables (Biomass, Solar and Photovoltaic) – in coordination with ELAN annual meeting in Brazil to be hosted at the BIN 2016 event (7-11 November).
