Hilco Streambank (www.hilcostreambank.com) is selling the intellectual property of Energy Conversion Devices and its subsidiary Unisolar. “This is an incredible opportunity to buy thin-film flexible solar technology with two decades of R & D and field experience in the industry,” said Gabe Fried, CEO of Hilco Streambank.

The IP portfolio includes patents and trade secrets with applications for continuous feed, flexible substrate, chemical deposition, and related manufacturing processes. While the technology was originally developed for thin film photovoltaics, it has applications for CIGS manufacturers, packaging manufacturers, and other chemical deposition processes. The products ECD developed are ideally suited for off-grid and rooftop application.

Also included in the sale process are technologies related to hydrogen extraction, hydrogen storage, and alkaline fuel cells. “ECD was a leader in alternative energy technology outside solar as these fuel cell technologies demonstrate. A prior sale of the ECD Ovonics battery business to BASF is indicative of the quality of the research conducted here,” Fried said.

The IP assets fall into 3 larger categories with descriptions available in the following:

Fried said, “We will also be providing access to a data room where technical information pertaining to the patents will be available to all interested parties."
