Huawei: Zero Carbon Network Helps for Carbon Neutral

The zero carbon network is designed to help telecom operators worldwide to reduce their energy cost, increase green power generation and to realize the carbon neutral in their telecom daily service.

As the upgrade from old tele-system to advanced 5G network, energy cost increased sharply partially because of the character of 5G tech itself, also comes from pressures of more and more equipment rooms and data centers. This would not only cause financial burden but obstacle their goal for carbon neutral. In China domestic market, Huawei saw an average power cost rise by over 20% for major telecom operators.

To help customers to reduce power cost, Huawei firstly suggests telecom operators a role shift from previous energy consumer only to now green energy generator and manager. And then to equip with Huawei’s zero carbon network solution which includes four major parts and integrated by Huawei’s intelligent power cloud to realize the carbon neutral target.

The simplified site part can simplify each telecom base station to with minimum size and energy cost. The simplified equipment room utilizes prefabricated and modular components to reduce cost of both new room and extension of existed room. The simplified data center (DC) will use indirect evaporated cooling and iCooling to reduce cooling cost, mostly by 17%, and use cloud operation and maintenance to increase O&M efficiency by up to 35%. And the green power for all utilizes renewable energy including wind and solar PV power to feed the system and reduce carbon emission.

With integration by Huawei’s Intelligent Power Cloud, the power generation, network, storage and power load in the system will be managed with high intelligence and the total system energy cost will be greatly reduced.

Zhou Taoyuan, vice president of Huawei and president of digital energy product line said on the conference that Huawei’s digital energy management has combined electricity power technology, information and communication technology (ICT) and digital network technology and concentrated in green power generation and efficient power consumption. So far Huawei has helped customers in over 60 countries to generate green power of 325 TWh, save power cost of 10 TWh.

When in answering question raised by PV Magazine on what is the vision of Huawei for this zero carbon network solution, Zhou replied firmly that “Huawei is dedicated to make efforts to contribute to the world's carbon neutrality.”
