The Bauhaus.SOLAR AWARD 2012, donated for the third time by SolarInput, Solarvalley Mitteldeutschland the German Association for the Solar Industry and the European Photovoltaics Association (EPIA), was won by the ‘Solarwald Tempelhof' project by Felix Heisel und Jonas Klock from Berlin University of Arts.
Two additional projects from Graz and Vienna were also commended. The awarding of the price had taken place during the evening event of the 5th international Bauhaus.SOLAR Conference on 13th November at the Messe Erfurt.
"Once again, in 2012, the Bauhaus.SOLAR AWARD is showcasing exemplary and innovative work from the interplay between teaching and research. The winning project provides an important contribution to the debate on the future use of the historical site that is Berlin-Tempelhof," explains Michael Frielinghaus, Chairman of the Jury and President of the Federation of German Architects (Bund Deutscher Architekten / BDA). "The project also symbolically interprets the history of the location."
The winning project, ‘Solarwald Tempelhof' is to be awarded with a 5,500 Euro grant. The plan for the former Berlin airport presents a mix of natural trees and many ‘solar trees'. Together they form an innovative solar power station, under the shade of which the townsfolk of Berlin can relax, take part in sports activities, set up barbeques or bring along picnics.
The key elements of the trees are their ‘crowns': Solar balloons that get their buoyancy from the sun alone. Regardless of their behaviour, black foils printed with solar cells in the inside of their transparent husks create electricity and warmth. The temporary concept creates space for other future uses of the location.
"We the organisers of the Bauhaus.SOLAR AWARD are pleased about the jury's decision. The architects awarded a project which takes up the environment surrounding the big city and develops it further," explains Dr. Hubert Aulich, Chairman of SolarInput and Solarvalley Mitteldeutschland. "The concept, with its aspiration for urban design, also combines superbly well with the thematic focus of this year's conference."
In addition to this, the works ‘Atmospheres' by Christoph Walter Pirker and Carmen Bakanitsch (Graz University of Technology) and ‘[Applied] Foreign Affairs: Guabuliga Well By The Thorn Tree' by Christian Car, Iona Petkova, Joseph Hofmarcher, Jürgen-Maximilian Strohmayer and Stefanie and Theresa Theuretzbacher (University of Applied Arts Vienna) were each awarded a prize of 3,000 Euro.
The ‘Atmosphere' project is commended for its ‘interval of light' vision. The Guabuliga project in Ghana is to gain an award for its local research and the handling and solving of a complex question with simple means. All the further seven nominees were awarded an allowance by the benefactors in total of 500 Euro per project.
The Bauhaus.SOLAR Award is endowed with 15,000.- Euro and awards work from the field of architecture and design that impressively demonstrate the use of renewable energies with a focus on photovoltaics. It offers talented young designers and architects the opportunity to present their designs, projects and innovations to the public and to companies and organizations. Students from all design and architecture courses in Europe were invited to take part as well as young designers and architects who have completed their studies up to two years ago.
The work submitted may not be over two years old and has to have been completed either during the course of study or two years afterwards at the latest. In the first stage of the competition, the top international jury selected 10 contributions from 40 projects from six European countries, which were then nominated for the Bauhaus.SOLAR Award and took part in the second stage of the competition.
On 12th November 2012 the jury met to select the winners.
