Here is a checklist of factors to consider before buying the right inverter and battery for the home:

Power requirement – It is important to know what is the total power requirement or which appliances will run at a time of power failure. Simpler appliances including fans and lights have lesser power requirements than refrigerators or an air conditioning unit.

VA rating of – the VA of an inverter is its volt ampere rating. It is the power supplied by the inverter to appliances. Most inverters are 60-80% efficient. In other words, their power factor is 0.6 to 0.8. The VA rating of the inverter is the power required by appliances divided by the power factor. For example, if a customer needs 550 W of power and average efficiency of the inverter is 70%, the VA rating required would be 550/0.7 = 785 VA. In the market, 800 VA inverters are available.

Battery support – To calculate the capacity of a battery, divide the total power requirement by the battery voltage. For example, if power requirement is 550 W and is required for four hours with a battery of 12 V, the battery size will be 550×4/12 = 183 Ah.

Once a customer knows the size of system required, half the job is done and sets can be purchased from online retailers including Loom Solar, which stocks inverters of various sizes.
