Solar energy powers a world of snow in the Netherlands: 13,000 solar panels installed on ski slopes

The  13.000 solar panels are spread out over two locations, one in Zoetermeer (3.000 panels) which is in the west and one in Landgraaf (10.000 panels) which is in the south of the Netherlands. The former was completed in 2017, the latter the start of this month. The completion of the project meant that there was reason to celebrate.

The installation of the solar panels on top of the ski slopes is regarded to be, constructively, one of the most challenging projects in Europe. Indi Energie partnered with Dutch full service solar company KiesZon to engineer and construct the project, while focussing their efforts on financing and managing  the project.

In total the two SnowWorld locations will generate approximately 2.500.000 kWh every year. On very sunny day's the solar roof in the southern part of the Netherlands, in Landgraaf, will produce more energy than is needed to power the indoor ski slope. The surplus of energy will then be made available for locals who live nearby.

SnowWorld, which is the largest indoor skiing facilitator in Europe, again got closer to reaching their ambitious sustainability goals. “Eventually”, says Wim Moerman, CFO at SnowWorld, “the goal is to become completely self sufficient.”
