Sunbox keeps lighting up Africa

1.6 Billion people on earth without electric lighting – a big goal for anyone who wants to change that. Sunbox set out to achieve this goal and to help the people to get their grip on solar solutions at affordable prices and to introduce off grid lighting on the African continent.

The latest accomplished project is the connection of a clinic of ‘Médicos do Mundo' on the Mozambique island to 24/7 electricity. The clinic suffers from four to five hours of power cuts everyday, usually during evening times when light is desperately needed if it comes to medical emergencies.

Now with the additional solar power the hospital can get rid of the candles and kerosene lamps mainly used to have sufficient lighting during night time births or else. So the high risk of setting fire to the hospital or burn patients is now banned.

Not only there is now light when needed, but with the solar energy supported by several portable 60W Sunboxes the patients have access to phones to call their worried relatives and doctors can use computers for their research and the important exchange about treatment methods with other doctors on the mainland.

The management of Sunbox is very proud of these achievements as Sunbox is getting closer to its ultimate goal – to light up Africa. “It all started with a voyage to the SabaSaba in Dar Es Salaam,” says Andrew Burgundy, Marketing Manager of SUNBOX. “Our CEO bought a cheap but very reliable solar cell phone charger and realised that a small family doesn’t need to spend a fortune to get the electricity they need at home.”

Ever since then, Sunbox has pursued its mission: to bring the advantages of electricity to the remote areas of Africa. “Off grid” people who can benefit enormously from electric power. In the form of lighting, cell phone chargers and other small appliances such as vaccine refrigerators. Sunbox solar solutions are designed to meet three basic needs: being affordable, ready to use and being portable.

“Up until now we have been offering them to the population and the feedback we get is amazing. We must understand that to be able to have light to do your homework is important. To allow communication by always having one’s cellphone fully charged is very helpful. But to be able to provide refrigeration for vaccines and other medicaments is vital! Bringing solar power to some of the most remote places of our planet may be a tough challenge but we believe it can be done,” says Andrew.

Sunbox is a division of the Inter Rent Lda group and was founded in 2010. The company quickly advanced to a key market player when it comes to portable solar solutions. Beginning of 2011, Sunbox opened its own engineering department for research and innovation purposes. Headquarters of the group are based in Maputo, Mozambique. More than 200 employees across three countries work for the group and its customers.
