Due to numerous reports, news has got around: The photovoltaic (PV) project business in Chile is booming. The wealthiest country in South America has unsubsidized electricity prices and fantastic solar potential. However, it is already clear that the market for large-scale PV projects will cool down soon. As in other PV country markets, the rooftop segments will gain importance as the market matures.
Accordingly, the new Net-Billing Act by the Chilean government came into effect at the end of October. Through this law, PV self-consumption projects below 100 kW will get a further upswing. Even if the law does contain some pitfalls, it is expected that, because of it, the market players will adapt to self-consumption rooftop projects in the coming years. Another attractive segment is open-space power plants below 10 MW in the central part of the country, close to the demand centers. This segment will become more relevant since the prominent large-scale projects in Northern Chile will soon cause grid overloads. Given the perfect PV conditions, an attractive market for plants >10 MW is evolving, with new installations between 200-300 MW annually.
