TÜV Rheinland appoints Gary Sorkin as Smart Grid Business Development Manager

In his new role, Sorkin will provide support to the company’s Electrical Group drawing on more than two decades of his data communications experience. Sorkin is based in the Pleasanton, Calif., office, which also houses a Smart Grid Test Laboratory.

Sorkin joins TÜV Rheinland’s team after having worked with the company as Smart Grid Business Development contractor. Before that, he served as Smart Grid Business Development Manager for National Technical Systems (NTS) in Culver City, Calif., where he designed and developed programs for specification compliance, functionality, and interoperability for various communications protocols, standards and technologies.

During his past consulting relationships he worked with utilities, alliances, standards organizations and the government, including ZigBee®, SunSpec Alliance, EnOcean, the USNAP Alliance, the Federal Communications Commission, Wi-Fi, WHQL, WPC (Qi), Microsoft, and many more.

Prior to NTS, Sorkin founded Pacific Communication Group in San Francisco, Calif., a consulting group to the electric energy industry. Earlier, as Director of Marketing for the USNAP Alliance, he co-authored the USNAP Version 2.0 specifications along with other top engineering talents. Before his work with USNAP, Sorkin was in charge of business development for Negawatt Inc., a start-up focusing on Smart Grid, among other energy systems and programs.

At Negawatt, he designed a DR system for Energy Australia in Sydney, Australia. He contributed intellectual property to a variety of organizations and alliances, including Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGiP), ZigBee Alliance, HomePlug Alliance, IEEE 802.15.4, Wi-Fi, Wi-SUN and IEEE P1901. Additionally, Sorkin has extensive technical experience in Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) and Power Line Communication (PLC) technologies.

For over one year, Sorkin was the associate editor for a weekly newsletter BPL Today, now published as SmartGrid Today. He has also been a frequent speaker at various trade shows, events and universities. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Miami in Florida and has many industry certifications, security clearances and awards.
