Vilion, a leading provider of commercial and industrial (C&I) battery energy storage solutions, together with its Swedish distribution partner NorrWatt AB, has commissioned a 6MW / 7.2MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Umeå, northern Sweden. The installation, located in the industrial area of Teg, will provide Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) and other flexibility services to support grid stability in the Nordic power system.

Northern Sweden is currently experiencing rapid industrial expansion driven by large-scale electrification and green-transition investments, including new battery manufacturing, fossil-free steel initiatives, and emerging hydrogen projects. This development is placing increasing pressure on the regional electricity grid and highlights the need for robust flexibility resources. The Umeå installation demonstrates how local energy storage can support this transformation by strengthening grid resilience and ensuring stable access to electricity in a high-growth region.

The project utilizes Vilion’s EnerCube solution, a containerized energy storage system engineered for high performance in cold and demanding environments. By responding rapidly to frequency deviations, the system contributes to balancing the national electricity grid and providing critical support to Sweden’s growing demand for ancillary services.

NorrWatt AB, Vilion’s official distributor in Sweden, led the local deployment and integration of the system. With expertise in the Swedish regulatory environment, FCR market participation, and project implementation under Nordic conditions, NorrWatt ensured a smooth commissioning process aligned with local requirements and customer needs.

The collaboration between Vilion and NorrWatt highlights how advanced energy storage technology can be adapted to regional grid challenges and industrial development. The Umeå installation marks an important milestone for Vilion’s continued expansion in the Nordics and reflects the rising demand for C&I-scale storage solutions capable of delivering grid services in northern Europe’s most dynamic industrial region.

Vilion and NorrWatt look forward to continued collaboration and to supporting the Nordic energy transition through additional utility and industrial storage projects.
