Egypt’s Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency (Egypt ERA) won the Policymaker of the Year Award. Thanks to the leadership of Managing Director Dr. Hafez El Salmawy, Egypt ERA has put in place a sound and competitive Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program which provides an attractive framework for international and local investors to develop long-term renewable energy power projects in Egypt. This program will introduce two important sources of growth for Egypt: clean energy and green jobs.

Egypt was also represented by Eng. Lamyaa Abdel Hady, Director of Solar FIT Program at the Ministry of Electricity. She won Solar Initiative of the Year for her role in leading the roll-out of the country’s 4,300MW renewable energy procurement program, the largest of its kind in the MENA region. Over 175 companies have submitted proposals for this program, underscoring its bankability and attractiveness to international investors.

“Today, Egypt is the most important renewable energy market in the MENA region,” said Vahid Fotuhi, President of MESIA. “The work that has been done by the Ministry of Electricity, NREA and Egypt ERA is outstanding. They truly deserve the awards they have received,” he added.

The other notable winners include:

Regional Company of the Year: Access Power MEA (Dubai)

Utility Company of Year: National Electric Power Company (Jordan)

Commercial advisor of the Year: International Finance Corporation (Dubai)

Legal Advisor of the Year: Eversheds (UK)

Technology of the Year: NOMADD (Saudi Arabia)

The awards selection was conducted by a jury of seven industry experts from around the world and chaired by Abdul Aziz Abdulla Al Midfa, Chairman of MESIA and Board Member of the Emirates Environment Group.

The annual gala ceremony was attended by over 200 dignitaries, government officials and senior business executives from across the Middle East.
