Sharp to begin mass production of new crystalline cells

The cells will be manufactured at the company’s Green Front Saki plant located in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan. Annual production capacity is expected to reach 200 megawatts (MWs). The company adds that the mass production will cover everything from solar cells to solar modules.

??Elaborating on the new cell design, Sharp says: “This single crystalline solar cell with high conversion efficiency uses a Back Contact structure (electrodes are connected on the back-side), which eliminates the need for electrodes to be set on the front-side. This new structure increases the light-receiving area on the front-side's surface.”

Additionally, the company explains that a new alignment technology, called the Alignment Sheet system, was also developed, which reportedly reduces the connection resistance between adjacent cells.

In the future, the cells will be used in a “broad range” of applications, including residential and industrial use, according to the company.
