India: First Solar powers 40 MW Rajasthan project02. April 2012 | Industry & Suppliers, Markets & Trends | By: Shamsiah Ali-Oettinger
First Solar's modules have been used to power a 40 megawatt (MW) ground-mounted photovoltaic power plant in Rajasthan that will provide clean energy to Mumbai.
The project, commissioned by Reliance Power, a Reliance ADA Group company, was completed in just five months and covers 350 acres (approximately 1.4 square kilometers). 500,000 First Solar thin film modules have been installed in the plant, near the village of Dhursar in Jaisalmer in northwestern India.
It is expected to generate more than 60 million kilowatt hours of electricity, making it one of the largest photovoltaic power plants in India in terms of energy generation. The Dhursar project is first of several Reliance projects that are to be built with First Solar modules as part of a 100 MW module order placed last year.
More than 70,000 average Indian homes will be powered by the annual electricity generation from the development. Meanwhile, nearly 60,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions will be saved per year.
"We are proud to partner with Reliance on this milestone project," said Mike Ahearn, First Solar chairman and interim CEO. "We applaud India on its visionary solar policies and Reliance Power for their leadership in implementing them, and we look forward to helping India realize its solar vision through this and future projects."
"This power plant demonstrates the huge potential of solar energy to help India meet its growing energy needs in the most environmentally friendly manner. It is also a testimony of the quick timeframe in which solar power plants can be built and commissioned," said Anil D Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Power.
