The aim is to advance the commercial development of SolarWindow, a product capable of generating electricity on see-through glass.

Under terms of the CRADA, NREL researchers will work towards achieving such goals as:

  • Further increasing SolarWindow’s efficiency and transparency;
  • ?Boosting electrical power (current and voltage) output; ?
  • Optimizing the application of the active layer coatings, which make it possible for SolarWindow to generate electricity on glass surfaces;
  • ?Increasing the size of the active layer in SolarWindow; and
  • ?Developing improved electricity-generating coatings.

"The addition of NREL's world-class solar research group to our ongoing efforts at the University of South Florida marks a significant step forward for our company and our SolarWindow technology," explains John Conklin, president & CEO of New Energy.

In a statement, the company adds that there are nearly five million commercial buildings in America, according to the Energy Information Administration, and more than 80 million single detached homes. It says that the SolarWindow technology is under development for commercial application in such buildings.

The company also recently announced that it has successfully achieved a three-fold increase in the number of solar cells layered onto glass surfaces. Presently, they have scaled up to a 12"x12" working demo.
