Comprised of 23,000 solar panels and spread across 20 different schools in the San Diego area, the project is expected to produce solar power equivalent to 64 percent of the energy consumption at the sites and generate 11 percent of SDUSDs total District-wide energy needs.
Overall, the five megawatts will comprise 86 installations, of which 80 will be located on rooftops and six on carports.
Originally announced back in May, it was said that this photovoltaic project should be completed in October and will be one of the largest school solar systems in California.
"The structure of this partnership ensures that the district has access to long-term energy stability with no taxpayer investment required, while at the same time bringing clean, renewable solar power for 20 of our campuses," commented Bill Kowba, superintendent of San Diego Unified School District.
Jared Blumenfeld, Administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys Pacific Southwest Region, and San Diego City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf are expected to attend tomorrows ground breaking ceremony.
SDUSD already has 4.17 MW of solar power located across 28 sites. When the current project is completed, it will bring its total solar power capacity to 9.17 MW.
