Approaching bankability for grid-scale energy storage

Demand for battery energy storage systems (BESS) is rapidly growing and scaling up supply at such a rate has proved to be a challenge. Beyond raw material shortage, there is another supply chain constraint which has to do with a relatively short list of battery makers trusted by investors.

A small pool of household names means fewer opportunities for utility-scale storage project developers to secure the necessary volume of batteries. Therefore, increasing the number of trusted suppliers is critically important, but making BESS bankable, investable, and insurable is no easy business.

In this pv magazine Webinar, we will examine how BESS manufacturers can best prove to investors and financial backers that their systems will perform or outperform their datasheets. The discussion will be initiated by China-based Gotion, an established player in the electric vehicle sector, which is now making a name for itself in the battery energy storage space.

Devon Wilson, director of business development ESS, is joining us to explain how the company has successfully met the bankability requirements by working with Black & Veatch and boosted its standing in the fast-growing industry. Representing Black & Veatch, one of the world’s most recognized business consultants and quality experts, Ralph Romero, senior managing director, will introduce the company’s bankability program and explain its relevance. Bill Reaugh, MBA principal engineer, VDE Americas, will provide an independent assessment of the bankability program from the perspective of a leading service provider of technical due diligence and engineering services for solar power and energy storage systems.

The attendees will walk away with a better understanding of what bankability for utility-scale energy storage projects is. They will also learn how bankability studies are carried out and reviewed by independent engineers.

Ralph Romero | Senior Managing Director, Black & Veatch Management Consulting

Dr. Ralph Romero is a recognized expert in the independent assessment of novel technologies. He has been the principal investigator in over 200 technology assessments in the areas of chemical and mechanical energy storage, power conversion systems, photovoltaic cells and modules, mechanical tracking systems, and hydrogen. He advises domestic and international manufacturers, developers and financial institutions in the areas of technology, manufacturing, product and process design, among others.

Bill Reaugh | MBA Principal Engineer, VDE Americas

Bill has over 20 years of electrical and electronics experience, starting in 1997 as a repair technician for the US Marine Corps. In 2002, Bill became the fourth hire at SMA America, where he spent 5 years building the technical training and customer service departments including the introduction of SMA’s first battery inverter the Sunny Island in the mid 2000’s. As a US product manager for an inverter OEM, Bill helped develop Kaco’s 1500-volt central and string inverters. Before joining VDE as its head of power conversion, Bill served as Blue Oak Energy’s Director of Engineering and has now worked on a wide range of solar and storage projects as large as 750 MW PV and 250 MW / 1000 MWh BESS.

Devon Wilson | Director of Business Development ESS, Gotion

Devon leads North American sales and partnership efforts for Gotion across Utility, C&I, and Residential applications as well as for cell and cell pack opportunities. A Mechanical Engineer by training, Devon managed engineering consulting projects in the automotive and rail sectors before transitioning into Energy Storage 5+ years ago. Previous to joining Gotion, Devon managed the residential team at BYD in the US.
